Spanish Amateur Radio Union AN8TID Tenerife Amateur Radio Union

As a part of the campaign to get the Teide National Park (Tenerife, Canary Islands) be included in the UNESCO's World Heritage List, a group of radio amateurs were on the air with the special callsign AN8TID on June 9 and 10, 2007, operating from La Rambleta (Teide mountain), at 3,555 metres of altitude.

This operation was possible thanks to Authorities, public and private organisations in Tenerife Island (Environment Direction of the Government of the Canary Islands, Teide National Park Administration, the Teide Cableway and the Telecom Authority, among others).

On June 27, 2007, UNESCO included the Teide National Park in its World Heritage List. With this designation, there are three Spanish members in the List, with Doñana and Garajonay National Parks (the later in Gomera island, also in the Canary Islands). Congratulations!

Geographical Data

The Teide National Park is located in the Tenerife Island, with an area of about 190 square km. Inside it is the Teide mountain, with an altitude of 3,718 metres, the highest point in Spain, and also the highest point in any Atlantic island. It is a volcano, the third by its volume, behind Maula Loa and Mauna Kea, both in Hawaii Island. Although its latest large eruptions took place centuries ago, it is considered an "active" volcano, and it is under close study and surveillance.
